Dubai's diamond market
The DMCC Diamond Exchange — part of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre — has become the fastest-growing major diamond hub globally over the past decade. The exchange now hosts more than 3,000 licensed diamond companies operating within the free zone, ranging from rough sorting offices to polished trading firms and retail jewellery groups. The DMCC's dedicated Diamond Exchange building in JLT provides bourse facilities, bonded vaults, and a trading floor that rivals Antwerp in daily rough volume for specific origin categories.
Zero import and export duty on rough and polished diamonds is the defining structural advantage of the DMCC free zone. For a buyer acquiring African rough at $200/ct and onward-selling to Indian manufacturers, the absence of import duty represents pure margin. No other major trading hub offers this combination of legal certainty, banking infrastructure, and zero-duty import economics.
Dubai has established itself as the primary marketplace for African rough diamonds flowing to Asian cutting centres, increasingly displacing Antwerp in this intermediary role. African producers who historically relied on Antwerp-based rough dealers as their route to market are increasingly finding that Dubai offers faster settlement, lower friction, and direct access to Indian and Chinese manufacturing buyers.
Why Dubai buyers look to African direct supply
Dubai's geographic position — equidistant between African producing countries and Asian manufacturing centres — makes it a natural hub for direct African supply. Established Arab-African business relationships, developed over decades of trade across sectors from construction to commodities, mean that trust and counterparty relationships exist at the right levels. African producers find Dubai buyers culturally fluent counterparts in a way that Antwerp relationships sometimes take longer to establish.
The zero-duty import economics are most compelling when the buyer intends to onward-sell to Surat or Mumbai manufacturers, or to Saudi and Gulf retail. The duty saving on a $5 million rough parcel is material. For buyers acquiring at volume — above 2,000 carats per month — structuring supply through DMCC is almost always economically superior to routing through Antwerp, even accounting for the additional logistics overhead from Africa.
African producers are aware of this dynamic. Botswana, Angola, and Namibia producers are increasingly willing to discuss direct supply relationships with DMCC-based buyers, and in some cases offer preferential pricing for buyers who can demonstrate consistent monthly absorption capacity.
What Dubai buyers typically acquire
Dubai's buyer base is diverse. The most active category is run-of-mine rough parcel buyers acquiring for onward sale to Surat and Mumbai manufacturers — these buyers require KP documentation, consistent monthly volume, and pricing that creates margin for resale. A second active category is polished lot buyers building inventory for Gulf retail — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait — where demand for 0.5–3ct commercial rounds and fancy shapes is substantial and year-round.
A third and increasingly important category is exceptional gem acquisition for Gulf HNWI clientele in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar. Family offices and private wealth managers in the Gulf are active acquirers of D–F colour, VVS–IF clarity stones in the 3ct+ range, often for direct private client placement without passing through a retail jeweller. OnePiece's network includes sellers of exceptional stones appropriate for this market.
