Antwerp — the world's diamond capital

Antwerp has been the world's primary diamond trading centre for over 500 years. The Diamantenwijk — the diamond quarter — occupies a compact district around Hoveniersstraat and Schupstraat, home to four operating bourses: the Antwerp Diamond Bourse (ADBC), the Beurs voor Diamanthandel (BDB), the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), and the Diamond Club of Antwerp. Together they form the most concentrated diamond trading infrastructure on earth.

Approximately 80% of the world's rough diamonds and 50% of all polished diamonds pass through Antwerp at some point in their journey from mine to jewellery. The Kimberley Process compliance framework was substantially shaped by Antwerp's existing documentation infrastructure. No other city has the combination of bourses, banks, valuers, bonded carriers, and insurance underwriters to match it.

For Antwerp traders, the AWDC Certificate of Origin and the attendant valuation infrastructure means that any parcel entering the city is expected to arrive with documentation that meets AWDC standards — origin certificate, KP certificate, weight and quality declaration, and an independently verifiable valuation.

Sourcing directly from African producers

For Antwerp buyers who source directly from African mines — bypassing the traditional sightholder allocation system — the economic case is compelling. At the right documentation quality, direct-source material can be acquired at 5–15% below Antwerp rough market reference prices, depending on size range, quality mix, and parcel consistency.

OnePiece maintains active relationships with producers in Botswana, Angola, Namibia, and Sierra Leone. These are legitimate, KP-compliant operations producing mine-tagged rough that arrives with full chain-of-custody documentation. We do not represent artisanal material without verified documentation. We do not represent any producer we have not independently verified.

For buyers who have historically relied on rough from De Beers sights or secondary market parcels, direct African sourcing requires a different compliance and logistics workflow — but the margin available makes that overhead worthwhile at volume above approximately 1,000 carats per month.

What Antwerp buyers need from sellers

Antwerp's compliance framework is among the most demanding in the world. Any seller delivering into Antwerp must provide: a valid Kimberley Process certificate (AWDC will independently verify the issuing authority), a DTC-equivalent valuation or independent valuation by a recognised Antwerp valuer, CIBJO-compliant stone quality declarations, and settlement through a recognised Belgian financial institution — or via escrow with a recognised international correspondent bank.

OnePiece ensures that sellers we introduce to Antwerp buyers have this documentation in order before any introduction is made. We do not introduce sellers to buyers until we are satisfied that the documentation package will pass Antwerp scrutiny. That standard protects both parties.
